How to prioritize a new application?

If you have an application which you wish to prioritize and it is not already in the application listing follow these steps to add and prioritize it.
 
Step 1) Define two bandwidth groups.
 
To do this first go to the Policy-Based Shaping menu under the Shaping tab and select the Bandwidth Groups button.  First create a default group which should have the lowest priority level and whatever default speed you wish to assign to by default (this can either be the max speed of the links or something slower by default).  Next create your priority group, this group should have a higher priority level (perhaps level 1) and whatever speed you wish to assign, perhaps the max speed of the links.
 
Step 2) Define a default policy.
 
The name of the default policy must also start with something that will place it above the other policies in the group, thus making it the default policy.
 
Example: Policy name A-Default will be placed before B-Shaping1, etc.
 
The default (A-Default) policy should define all traffic for the network.
 
Step 3) Define the new service using the New Service button.
 
Once the new service is defined, go back to create your new policy.
 
Step 4) Create the new policy to prioritize the new service.
 
Now define the priority policy like you did the default policy, except use the bandwidth group you create which has the higher priority level.  Make sure you use the same network definition that you use when creating the default policy.
 
Once both policies have been added you can Apply the policies to the running configuration.
 
The changes take place immediately.
 
Summary: Based on packet matching, all traffic coming from the defined network will initially match the default policy setting all of that traffic to whatever base levels you defined in the default bandwidth group.
 
When the newly defined service is matched using the port/protocol ID that you assigned to it, that traffic will be matched to the non-default bandwidth group that you created.  Thus that traffic will be prioritized over the default traffic.
 
This will ensure that all traffic is given a default priority and rate-limit (if assigned) and that the application you defined will get the highest priority and rate-limit (if assigned).
